Paul, Bimal Kanti Stimers, Mitchel Caldas, Marcellus Predictors of compliance with tornado warnings issued in Joplin, Missouri, in 2011. Improvements in the effectiveness of postdisaster interventions at schools will follow from future scientific evidence on optimal approaches. Despite timely and proactive services, many families and children struggled after the tornado. Evidence from Joplin adds to a small body of empirical experience demonstrating the important contribution of schools to postdisaster community recovery. Selective referrals were made to community mental health providers for children with greatest needs. Certified counselors conducted school-based, small-group counseling for students. In just-in-time training sessions, teachers developed strategies to support students and staff experiencing anxiety or depression. Displaced children were bused to their usual schools regardless of their new temporary residence locations. The 2011-2012 school year began on time, less than three months after the disaster, using temporary facilities. An expanded summer school session emphasized child safety and emotional wellbeing. Despite severe damage to half of the city's schools, the decision was made to reopen schools at the earliest possible time to provide a safe, reassuring environment and additional services. After the tornado, school staff immediately worked to contact every enrolled child to provide assistance and coordinate recovery services. Key informant interviews with school staff (teachers, psychologists, guidance counselor, nurse, principal), public health official, and physicians. Qualitative exploratory study conducted six months after the tornado. To qualitatively describe interventions by schools to meet children's needs after the May 2011 Joplin, Missouri tornado. Most healthcare workers reported to work following this disaster, demonstrating true resilience. If their hospital had provided alternative childcare, 51% would have used it and 42% felt they would have been more willing to report to work. Nearly half (48.5%, n=598) had childcare responsibilities 61% (n=366) had childcare needs the week of the tornado, and 54% (n=198) required the use of alternative childcare. They expressed significantly higher post- tornado personal disaster preparedness, but only preevent preparedness was a significant predictor of postevent preparedness. Healthcare workers report more willingness to work during a future earthquake or tornado compared to their pre- Joplin tornado attitudes (86.2 vs 88.4%, t=-4.3, p<.001 88.4 vs 90%, t=-3.1, p<.01, respectively), with no change during other scenarios. Most (87.8%) worked the week following the Joplin tornado. A total of 1,234 healthcare workers completed the survey (response rate: 23.4%). For those with childcare responsibilities, scheduling, costs, and impact of hypothetical alternative childcare programs were considered in the analyses. In May 2013, a survey was distributed to healthcare workers at both Joplin hospitals that asked them to report their willingness to work and personal disaster preparedness following various disaster scenarios. We sought to assess the resilience of healthcare workers in these hospitals as measured by number reporting to work, willingness to work, personal disaster preparedness, and childcare responsibilities following the disaster. Next, choose the “Review” tab at the top, and you’ll find Interval Modifier on the list. Once you’ve determined what you want to set your Interval Modifier to in Anki, click on the gear icon next to your deck. How to Change the Interval Modifier in Anki To get to 95% from 85%, you’re going to have to spend 68% more time, or an extra hour, studying your cards every day. So while 5% better doesn’t sound like a big ask, you’re going to end up spending a lot more time than you realize to get that next 5% of retention. This means you’re going to spend 35% (!) more time, or an extra 30 minutes, studying your cards every day. If you decide you would rather have that rate be more like 90%, you are going to set the Interval Modifier to 65% so your cards more often: Imagine a scenario where you study 90 minutes a day and are able to achieve a retention rate of 85%. Just as the forgetting curve (how forget over time) is non-linear, the relationship between time spent studying and retention rate is also non-linear. Interval Modifier = log(0.85) / log(0.90) = 154% How to Decide on Your Desired Retention Rate If you want to target 85% retention and you’re currently at 90% retention, you would make the following calculation: Interval Modifier = log(desired retention%) / log(current retention%) The formula to adjust your Interval Modifier is: Use Retention Rate to Find the Optimal Interval Modifier No need to spend months over-reviewing only to increase your Interval Modifier down the line. Depending on the age of the deck you are optimizing for, you’ll want to consider both “Young” and “Mature” cards.Īnki’s docs recommend not changing the Interval Modifier until you have plenty of Mature cards, but I have found that it’s fine to tweak my settings a little sooner than that. Ignore the blue “Learning” category for now. Your retention rate will be the % of times you answered with a Correct button. That said, if you need to know information better and are satisfied with a 90% rate, that is personal preference.Īnything above 90%, and you are likely repeating cards too frequently. Of course, it helped that I tried very hard to come up with good mnemonics up front that would save me time re-learning the card later down the line. When I was learning Chinese characters, I added 30 new cards to my deck every day and was able to finish my reviews in 30-45 minutes, leaving an hour to focus on new cards. With an 85% retention rate, you can get through a lot of reviews and still continue to learn a fair amount of new words every day. This is based on my personal experience learning Russian as well as attempting to learn 3,000 Chinese Characters in under 4 months. Your retention rate is going to depend on how well you need to know every piece of information, how long you have to study every day, and how difficult your cards are.įor language learning, I recommend a target retention rate of 85%. What Should I Set My Interval Modifier To?Īnki’s docs recommend aiming for a retention rate of 90%. The less often you study, the lower your retention rate will be. Your Interval Modifier essentially trades time/frequency of reviews for retention rate. Your retention percentage will plummet, and review sessions will eventually become very frustrating. When you don’t see review cards frequently enough, you will forget the information before you have a chance to re-engage with it and maintain its memory. If your intervals are too long, you are seeing cards too rarely. I wrote about how I escaped it while learning Chinese here. This is known as something called “Ease Hell” in the Anki community. Plus, you are wasting valuable time that could be used to learn new cards. If you’re seeing the same cards too often, you are lowering desirable difficulty (thus, lowering engagement and memory formation). If your intervals are too small, you are seeing cards too often. The Interval Modifier is a useful tool to adjust your retention percentage, the percentage of review cards that you answer correctly. Interval * Interval Modifier = New Intervalġ0 days * 120% = 12 days (new interval) Why Should I Change My Interval Modifier? Were you to implement that modifier, you would see the card next in 12 days instead of 10. For now, let’s assume you have an Interval Modifier of 120%. Let’s say you have a card where a Good answer will result in you seeing the card in 10 days (interval = 10). You can use this to increase or decrease the default review time for every card. If you are trying to optimize your Anki settings, you should definitely be looking at your Interval Modifier.Īnki’s Interval Modifier takes the normal interval for a card and multiplies it by the interval modifier. Examples include Lopressor (metoprolol), Inderal (propranolol), and Corgard(nadolol).

The hymn From all that dwell below the skies, a paraphrasing of Psalm 117 by Isaac Watts with the Doxology as the final verse, is commonly sung to the tune. The melody can be used for any hymn text in long meter, that is, with four lines of eight syllables in iambic feet. Modernized versions of that text are also widely used. Praise God, from Whom all blessings flow The original lyrics set to this tune in the Genevan Psalter are a paraphrase of Psalm 134: Calvin intended the melodies to be sung in plainsong during church services, but harmonized versions were provided for singing at home. The final version of this psalter was completed in 1562. Calvinist musicians including Bourgeois supplied many new melodies and adapted others from sources both sacred and secular. This contrasted with the prevailing Catholic practice at the time in which sacred texts were chanted in Latin by the clergy only. The Genevan Psalter was compiled over a number of years in the Swiss city of Geneva, a center of Protestant activity during the Reformation, in response to the teaching of John Calvin that communal singing of psalms in the vernacular language is a foundational aspect of church life. In that latter respect it was used by Johann Sebastian Bach as a cantus firmus in his chorale cantata Herr Gott, dich loben alle wir (BWV 130). The melody is also sung to various other lyrics, including the Common Doxology and various German Lutheran chorales. 1560).Īlthough the tune was first associated with Psalm 134 in the Genevan Psalter, the melody receives its current name from an association with the 100th Psalm, in a translation by William Kethe entitled "All People that on Earth do Dwell". The tune is usually attributed to the French composer Louis Bourgeois ( c. It is one of the best known melodies in many occidental Christian musical traditions. " Old 100th" or " Old Hundredth" (also known as " Old Hundred") is a hymn tune in long metre, from the second edition of the Genevan Psalter. You can also have a spare lever or cord, too, just in case. I have done this more times than I can count and it always paid to have a spare blade to pop right on. If you drop your clipper, even though the body is quite durable, you can end up chipping a tooth on your clipper. It is a good idea to have not only a backup blade but also other parts. Of course, if you are feeling bold and have some time on your hands you can always sharpen them yourself ! Have Back Up Everything Having a spare set, you can send out your blades to be sharpened once in a while without missing a beat. I recommend having a spare set of Andis Master blades that you can get from. Spraying it will Kool Lube before and after each cut will also help keep things running smoothly. You should be adding oil directly to the blades all throughout the working day.Īll you have to do is add a drop at each end of the blade while it is running to get it applied evenly. Since we’re talking about metal rubbing against metal you need to make sure all the parts are oiled properly. Once a week or so you’ll need to do a deeper clean of your clipper and use a blade wash to get all of the gunk and grime off of the blades. Human hair is very acidic and will dull your blades if you don’t keep your blades free from hair.Īt the end of the day take your blade off and spray it off with some compressed air like this one from to make your life easier. Have an old toothbrush on hand or a small rigid bristle brush to clean any hair off of the blades before and after each use.
